MyHospitals overview

MyHospitals is a government-owned website that has been set up to ensure the entire Australian community has easy access to nationally consistent and comparable performance information for public and private hospitals.

The information on this site is for members of the public, clinicians including doctors and nurses, academics and researchers, hospital and health service managers, journalists and others.

The site allows you to view the performance of more than 1,000 public and private hospitals against indicators such as waiting times in emergency departments or for some types of surgery, rates of bloodstream infections acquired in hospital, the length of time patients spend in hospital after being admitted for various conditions or procedures, and other indicators.

Why public reporting matters

The MyHospitals website provides nationally consistent, locally relevant information that allows fair comparisons to be made at the level of individual hospitals or health services.

In many cases, the reports and data available on this website provide the only means by which it is possible to see how a particular hospital fares on a specific performance measure compared to other similar hospitals across the country.

This local-level reporting focusing on performance at specific hospitals – as opposed to the state or national-level reporting featured in many other national reports – has been shown internationally to exert a powerful effect in accelerating improvements in health services.

State or national-level figures average out the differences between local areas and conceal which hospitals or health providers are doing particularly well, and identify services where improvements may be necessary. Only community-level or hospital-level reporting gives health managers, patients and others the knowledge they need to see where improvements can be made.

Website history

Established in 2010, the MyHospitals website was set up to provide the public, clinicians, hospital managers, health system managers and health care experts greater access to Australian hospital performance information.

Performance indicator reporting

The reports, results and measures available on this website are underpinned by the Performance and Accountability Framework. The Framework was endorsed by the Council of Australian Governments in late 2011 and released in May 2012, and identifies 48 indicators against which performance will be measured under the domains of equity, effectiveness and efficiency. There are 17 hospitals indicators and 31 indicators for primary health care organisations. For more information see the Performance and Accountability Framework External link, opens in a new window.
