Waiting times for surgery for malignant cancer
The information shown is for planned surgery (sometimes referred to as elective surgery), defined as surgery that can be scheduled by placing the patient on a waiting list. Patients that were deemed to require emergency surgery at the time of planning are not placed on public hospital waiting lists and are not included.
Indicator
Waiting times are reported for patients:
- Who had a principal diagnosis of malignant bowel, breast or lung cancer
- Who received surgery for the treatment of malignant bowel, breast, or lung cancer
- Whose surgeries were considered to be urgent (required within 30 days) or semi-urgent (required within 90 days) by the treating doctor.

About the indicator
The number of surgeries reported is the number of hospital admissions for planned urgent and semi-urgent surgery for malignant cancer.
A range of 10-30 surgeries is reported at hospitals that performed between 10 and 30 (inclusive) cancer surgeries in 2012–13.

About the indicator
The median waiting times is the number of days within which half of people received their planned urgent or semi-urgent surgery for malignant cancer; the remaining half waited longer than the median waiting time for surgery.
