Big differences in length of hospital stays and rate of avoidable admissions

The number of days patients stay in hospital for a range of common treatments can be up to four times higher at some big-city hospitals compared to hospitals of a similar size, a new National Health Performance Authority report shows.

The report provides information on length of stay among patients who spent at least one night in any of 125 public hospitals for one of 16 selected conditions or procedures, including childbirth (vaginal and caesarean delivery), cellulitis, kidney and urinary tract infections, gallbladder removal, and hip and knee replacement.
